The story of the Maldives is filled with courage, resilience, and determination. Among its most celebrated figures stands Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam, better known as Bodu Thakurufaanu. He is remembered as the national hero who freed the Maldives from Portuguese rule in the 16th century.
Early Life
Bodu Thakurufaanu was born on the island of Utheemu in Haa Alif Atoll around 1528. Growing up in a time of foreign occupation, he witnessed first-hand the suffering of the Maldivian people under Portuguese control. These early experiences shaped his vision to liberate the nation.
The Portuguese Rule
In 1558, the Portuguese established dominance over the Maldives after killing Sultan Ali VI. Their rule was marked by oppression, forced conversions, and violence. For Maldivians, it was a period of fear and loss of sovereignty.
The Resistance
Bodu Thakurufaanu, along with his brothers Ali Thakurufaanu and Hassan Thakurufaanu, began a long resistance campaign. Using a small boat named Kalhuohfummi, they carried out guerrilla attacks on Portuguese forces.
Their strategy was bold: landing at night, striking swiftly, and retreating by dawn. This campaign lasted for eight years, spreading hope across the islands.
Victory and Liberation
In 1573, Bodu Thakurufaanu and his brothers launched their final assault on Malé. They defeated the Portuguese garrison and reclaimed independence for the Maldives.
After victory, Bodu Thakurufaanu was declared Sultan, taking the throne as Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam. His reign brought stability, protection from further invasions, and reforms that strengthened the Maldivian state.
Legacy
Bodu Thakurufaanu is remembered not only as a warrior but as a symbol of unity and resilience.
- His courage ensured that the Maldives remained a free and independent nation.
- He continues to be honoured with public monuments, stories, and the annual National Day (celebrated on the first of Rabi’ al-Awwal in the Islamic calendar).
- His home island, Utheemu, remains a historical site with the famous Utheemu Ganduvaru (his wooden palace) preserved to this day.
Bodu Thakurufaanu’s story is not just history – it is the spirit of Maldivian identity. His legacy reminds every Maldivian of the importance of freedom, courage, and standing firm in the face of oppression.
He is, and will remain, the Hero of the Maldives.
