Built from the Reef

Centuries ago, Maldivian craftsmen cut blocks of coral stone (hirigaa) from shallow reefs. The coral was dried under the sun, hardened, and then carefully shaped into smooth, interlocking stones.

Unlike ordinary masonry, coral blocks were carved with remarkable precision. Intricate floral patterns, Quranic inscriptions, and geometric designs were etched into their surfaces – turning each mosque into both a place of prayer and a work of art.

No cement.
No steel.
Only skill.

Devotion in Detail

Inside these mosques, the craftsmanship continues. Wooden beams made from local hardwoods were carved with elaborate patterns. Lacquer work in red, black, and gold adorned ceilings and prayer niches.

Even the mihrab – indicating the direction of Mecca – was sculpted directly into coral walls with delicate detail.

Each mosque tells a story of faith expressed through artistry.

Surviving the Centuries

Despite being built from coral – a material born from the sea – many of these mosques have survived for hundreds of years. They endured monsoons, salt air, and time itself.
