The Maldives has a tropical climate shaped by the Indian Ocean monsoon system. Instead of four seasons, the year is divided into two main ones:
- Dry Season (Northeast Monsoon – Iruvai): November to April
- Wet Season (Southwest Monsoon – Hulhangu): May to October
Temperatures remain warm throughout the year (averaging 25–31°C), making the Maldives a true year-round destination.
The Dry Season (November – April)
- Weather: Clear skies, calm seas, and plenty of sunshine.
- Best For: Honeymooners, luxury travellers, and water sports enthusiasts.
- Highlights:
- Peak diving/snorkelling visibility (30+ metres).
- Calm seas ideal for island-hopping and cruising.
- Festive season celebrations (Christmas and New Year in resorts).
Note: This is the high season, so prices for resorts and flights are at their highest. Advance booking is essential.
The Wet Season (May – October)
- Weather: Occasional heavy rains, stronger winds, and slightly rougher seas.
- Best For: Surfers, budget travellers, and adventurous explorers.
- Highlights:
- Maldives’ surfing season peaks (May–September) with world-class breaks.
- Cheaper resort and guesthouse rates.
- Marine life like manta rays and whale sharks are more active.
Tip: Rain usually comes in short bursts – don’t expect days of constant downpour.
When Should You Go?
- For Romance & Relaxation: December – March
- For Adventure & Surfing: May – September
- For Whale Shark & Manta Ray Encounters: May – November (especially South Ari & Baa Atoll)
- For Budget Travel: May – October (wet season discounts)
There is no “bad” time to visit the Maldives. It depends on your priorities – sun-soaked luxury, surfing thrills, or affordable escapes. Whatever season you choose, the Maldives offers beauty that transcends the calendar.
